Chile, Grapes, and Wine

We’re excited to be partnering with the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta and offering exclusive event-specific artwork. Kevin Red Star, represented at Sorrel Sky, is the official artist of this year’s Fiesta. The original painting that Kevin created embodies the spirit of this annual event which features Santa Fe restaurants and world-class wineries, cooking demos, wine seminars, winery luncheons, and dinners.

Ben Nighthorse and Kevin Red Star

Kevin Red Star grew up on the Crow reservation in southern Montana, a member of a highly creative family. His close ties to Santa Fe can be traced back to the late sixties. Chosen to be in the first group of students to attend the Institue of American Indian Arts, the school provided him with a learning environment that encompassed tribal traditions, world art history, and current trends. Red Star and his fellow students mined their ancient customs for content and then created exciting new forms to provide current relevance. Along with other members of his graduating class, Red Star continued his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute.

“Representing Kevin for the past two decades has been both a privilege and an honor, professionally and personally.

Shanan Campbell

Today, Red Star’s art is honored throughout Native America for its authenticity. It presents a shining vision of centuries-old Crow (Apsaalooka) culture through the eyes of a thoroughly contemporary consciousness. Through difficulty and triumph, grief and joy, and with increasing clarity and complexity in his painting, he has created an indelible expression of his tribal legacy. Known for his attention to historical detail, each element has a specific meaning and significance within the context of tradition; whether depicting warriors, women, ceremonies, costumes, shields, or tepees. Through color and composition, the subject springs vividly to life, reflecting the mastery of style and technique Red Star has gained over the course of the years. Around the world, in museums and private collections, he is equally respected for the content of his unique imagery and for the intrinsic value of his work. Red Star continues to evolve and refine his art every day in his spacious studio, located near the Crow reservation and the resort town of Red Lodge, Montana. He also spends time in Santa Fe, where his career began. Each morning brings new facets of his vision to life on canvas, as he lives and works within the all-absorbing power of his art.

Shanan Campbell, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery, talked about representing Red Star for twenty years. “I’ve known Kevin for such a large portion of my life. Representing him for the past two decades has been both a privilege and an honor, professionally and personally. His ever-enduring imagery continues to evolve and yet remains classic and timeless.”
