No Rider. No Saddle. No Bit. No Bridle.

“I feel my work is an homage to the equine spirit.” – Tony Stromberg

We’re pleased to announce the representation of fine art equine photographer Tony Stromberg. Join us in welcoming this internationally renowned artist to the gallery with a one-man show during Noel Night on December 6, 2019, at our downtown Durango, Colorado location, 828 Main Ave from 5:00-9:00 pm. Tony will be in attendance to answer questions about his work and inspiration, as well as sign copies of his book, Horse Medicine. The show continues through the holiday season, closing on December 31, 2019.

Tony Stromberg spent 20 years as a high-end advertising photographer before searching out a subject that he could learn from. Finding himself disenchanted and his “inner landscape barren,” he began to seek his lost spirit. When horses came into his life, Stromberg realized that he had found his teachers, and the connections that he developed with horses helped steer his life in a completely different direction. “Horses have taught me so much in the time that I have spent with them. They have taught me about the power of authenticity, honesty, integrity, and the true meaning of leadership and relationship. They have also taught me about living in collaboration and community.”

Often referred to as “visual poetry,” Tony’s images truly embrace and reveal the incredible beauty and grace of the horse. “I feel my work is an homage to the equine spirit and to the archetypal role they play in our lives. This is why I always photograph them without riders, saddles, bits, bridles or any other device that would interfere with their pure essence.”

Shanan Campbell, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery, revealed her personal interest in Stromberg’s imagery. “I grew up riding and my time spent with our horses remains precious to me. Tony’s work captures all the emotions that those memories hold. Whether we experience the energy and intelligence of horses firsthand or observe it through art, Tony beautifully communicates those magical moments.”

Artist Workshop | August 3 – 7, 2020
Equine Photography with Tony Stromberg

Join Tony for a fun, informative, “in the field” workshop. Spend 5 solid days photographing one of our favorite archetypal subjects, the horse. We will be shooting horses running free against beautiful Colorado backdrops, in a variety of settings. Photography sessions will be held in the mornings and afternoons at a ranch about 15 minutes outside Durango. Tony will share his entire creative process with participants: how to see and work with light, planning a shoot with the right angles and perspectives, choosing backgrounds, camera settings during the shoot, and all that goes into the creation of a dynamic image after it has been shot. This class is for intermediate to advanced. Contact the gallery for inquiries regarding registration and supply list.
