“I hear from the Ancient Ones, the horse has always been with the plains people.” – Kevin Red Star
“Horse People,” featuring internationally and nationally acclaimed Crow artist, Kevin Red Star, opens on August 4, 2017 with an artist reception from 5-7:30 pm, with the show continuing through August. Red Star fully captures the essence of his culture, providing the viewer with a visual history and authentic insights into the “Horse People.” It has been said that the Crow have a mythical connection with the horse. “I hear from the Ancient Ones, the horse has always been with the plains people. They were essential to life; for hunting and scouting, for guarding and moving camp. Everyone was connected to the horse. The warrior, the lookout, the young ones and the old ones.” Intertwining his Indian culture with a contemporary perspective, Red Star brings this harmonious relationship, based on honor and reverence, to life with a collection of new works.
During Indian Market the Native American Group Show will open on August 17, 2017 with an artist reception from 5-7:30 pm, showcasing the gallery’s Native American artists, including Ben Nighthorse, Ray Tracey and Kevin Red Star, along with many others. Show will continue through August. The All Inclusive Group Show will open on August 18, 2017 with an artist reception from 5-7:30 pm. This show features the gallery’s full cadre of varied and diverse artists, all of whom are invited to attend. Many will be on hand, providing the opportunity to discuss their work, process and artistry. Show will continue through August. The life and works of renowned Native American artist, Pablita Ta-Nez-Bah Abeyta, 1953-2017, will be celebrated on August 20, 2017 from 4-6pm. Ta-Nez-Bah, Abeyta’s Navajo name, translates to “One Who Completes a Circle.” Her life and work were truly reflective of her name, as she tirelessly promoted the importance of family, community, heritage, justice, and the strength of women. Join us in celebrating her passion, strength, insight, talent and skill, as she continues to be an inspiration to those that knew her, and those that will come to know her through her work.
Shanan Campbell Wells, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery, sees the gallery’s many August events as celebratory. “Kevin’s work continuously broadens our perspective of Native cultural themes.
