Wilderness photographer pursues the perfect light to show in Durango gallery
Sorrel Sky Gallery of Durango is pleased to announce the representation of wilderness photographer Robert Turner.
Robert Turner’s love of wilderness began as a boy spending much of his youth exploring the lush forests of upstate New York and New Jersey. After a 30-year career in filmaking and working professionally with a camera, he has turned his lens to the natural world. Today Turner devotes his energies to the pursuit of light on the land, a soft light that enhances the colors he captures in his large format landscape photographs of remote places.
In his search for images Turner is drawn to color, especially when it is reinforced by atmosphere—mist, rain, storm clouds, the afterglow of sunset. Moisture and light work together, like the interplay of harmony and melody in music, to create moods.
“In my photography I strive to create works of enduring beauty – images that will inform the soul and convey my deep belief in the value of wild places,” offers Turner.
Whether chasing the light in the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies or in the Red Rock country of Utah, Turner can be found, at sunrise or sunset, waiting for just the right conditions to capture through his 4 x 5 view camera. Music –classical or jazz– is often playing as he waits, helping to inspire his vision as he captures a moment that transcends the ordinary.

Turner was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to create a montage of ninety photographs to be projected above the orchestra for two performances during the Spring Pops season.
The traveling exhibit, ROBERT TURNER: RARE PLACES IN RARE LIGHT, was hosted in recent years by the Harvard Museum of Natural History as well as venues in San Diego, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Cody, Wyoming, and Napa Valley, California.
His work hangs in numerous private and corporate collections across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Sorrel Sky Gallery’s fresh approach to Western art presents a select collection of contemporary and traditional fine art and jewelry for the discerning collector. Sorrel Sky Gallery was founded in Durango, CO in 2002 and opened its Santa Fe, NM location in 2014.
